The Quagmire of my Discontent: The Apocalypse of WeeSaul - Abondon all hope, ye who enter here!!!
I may be stupid...
I don't understand folks - never did, never will I suppose...
During the past four years, I have been promoting cancer research online (see "The Grid" link on the lower right of this page or on my Web site). Over the weekend I had a family member die as a result of cancer which is bad enough for the family to go through...
But the thing I cannot understand is why many of my geek friends with their over-clocked jacked-up ÜberPuters haven't followed my lead. Many of them do grid computing, but most are working on SETI stuff. I personally have nothing against seti@home or any program of its nature, but what difference does it make in the grand scheme of things. I am sure that we all agree that there is intelligent life out there in the universe, but don't ya think that we should be taking care of our own first? Yes, it would be nice to have proof of aliens, but to find a message that was sent four-hundred thousand years ago really can't be considered communicating with other beings. And what difference would it be between finding the message tomorrow or forty years from now?
Number two excuse I've heard over the past four years is that someone else will profit from the research. Let's say that you worked for Microsoft and wrote a program that sold millions of copies, who would profit? If you said the shareholders you are correct. You wouldn't directly benefit from your work, someone else would - this is a fact of life in the business world. And above all else, if the cure or treatment is found amongst your results, what is it worth to you to save or prolong a life? Does it really matter if you don't get paid if you end up saving someone?
And so ends my rant for the day. If you can, please join in the fight...
This is the Word of the AntiCrust...
Praise be the Word...
